The Rockwell Rover

A Very Special Rover......

This 1966 Land Rover Series IIA 109 belonged to my grandparents, Arthur & Clara Rockwell. Although I am still trying to verify the whole story, I believe the Rover was custom-built for the United Nations and imported into Costa Rica sometime in 1966.

After the United Nations had completed their project, Arthur & Clara Rockwell purchased the Rover circa 1970. They drove it for many years and I distinctly remember by Grandma Clara at the wheel navigating the challenging roads in and around Monteverde.

After my grandparents passed away, the Rover went to my Aunt Dorothy. She drove it for many years and at some point my cousin Howard Rockwell converted it from gasoline to diesel. The engine block was identical for both configurations, so the engine in the vehicle has matching numbers.

After my Aunt Dorothy passed away, the Rover went to my cousin Howard. He did a fantastic job of keeping the Rover running and on the road. After years of reminding him that if he was ever interested in selling it that I wanted first right-of-refusal, he agreed to sell me the Rover.

My brothers and I plan on doing a frame-off resto-modification to keep the original aesthetics but give it a more modern (and livable) running gear..... stay tuned for our progress.
